Visible Effects of the Invisible
That sound waves are periodic compressions and rarefactions of the air, whizzing along at 1200 km/h (Mach 1), has been heard before, but one would like to see proof. A loudspeaker sends sound waves into a closed glass tube filled with some liquid, which at certain frequencies trigger standing waves in the tube in the form of small fountains. Amplitude and wavelength thus become directly visually observable!
